WATER: WHY YOU SHOULD TRACK YOUR CONSUMPTION

We’ve all heard that we need to drink 2 to 4 litres of water per day. Estimating by “glasses” doesn’t get us very far, we need to be tracking every millilitre to ensure we reach our daily intake goals.

Tracking = reaching the goals

When we track progress of something, whether it be a workout or diet, we track with a goal in mind. Without having a specific goal it can be difficult in finding the reason behind doing something, and thus the healthy habit might slip.

The goal is there to keep us focused, and working in the right direction. It also allows us to reach our desired outcome.

For example, it we want to drink more water to hydrate our skin, we need to find the amount it would take to achieve that result. We then need to track our intake to maintain the momentum of reaching that daily goal.

It can be as simple as saying “I want to drink 2 litres of water a day”, without tracking our consumption we may fall short.

Tracking gives us control

To not fall short would require control. Controlling your consumption allows you to reach the goal, but it also allows you to pace yourself.

Pacing is important with water consumption. There is no point setting a target and achieving it within one sitting (sculling 2 litres at once). This can only provide more harm than good.

PRO TIP: Set times during the day with specific measurements to have a controlled outcome.

By having this control, we achieve our goals more efficiently and have better effect on our bodies. Keeping hydrated in intervals is highly beneficial, it can even be used as a routine part of your mental health progress, diet and exercise practises.

Medical Benefit

Have you ever been to the doctor, dietician or nutritionist and they ask “how much water do you drink per day?”, tracking is the perfect way to have an accurate answer for this question.

Providing health professionals, even trainers, with accurate data on consumption will allow for your health and fitness goals to be achieved much easier. It allows for better planning and preparation of diets and workouts, as well as allowing the practitioner to set realistic goals for your water consumption based on your individual needs.
